12-11-11 Looking back on ASBOs and hoodies

The ASBOs policy, which your textbook presents as the main reading  in Unit 2, has grown quite old. In fact, it is a law that dates back to 1998, when Tony Blair was the Prime Minister. After some years, ASBO effectiveness has been questioned several times and there have been reports suggesting that it has done very little to reduce the crime rate among teenagers.   Thanks to the Internet,  we can find out information on British people’s perceptions and reactions to ASBO’s implementation.

In this blog we aim at updating the materials you find in your textbook. We also like to use real materials (texts from newspapers, you tube videos, webpages, blogs) that are meant for a purpose other than teaching a language. We hope they provide a fresher  insight to textbook readings, particularly when the topics  presented in  texbooks  tackle current issues which, by their very nature,  need to be revised, re visited and asessed as time passes.

You will find two tasks in this post. The first consists on watching two videos that look at ASBOs from a humorous tonge-in-cheek perspective. You will have to check new vocabulary and reflect on whether you find them funny.

In the second task, we have chosen three  texts that illustrate different ways of breaking the stereotyped image of young people antisocial behaviour. We’ve chosen “hoodies” as their most representative image.  The texts are quite short. You have to read  the three texts and identify the actions they propose.  You also have to give your opinion on the efectiveness of these initiatives.

Here follow two videos. ASBOs are mentioned in both of them. There is certainly humour and irony in the way they approach the topic. Let’s see what you think of them.

First, have a look at this  humorous gag from a BBC comedy program and answer the questions

  • What is unusual about this gang?
  • Where do they hang around
  • Why are the locals intimidated?
  • What does the shop owner suggest should be reintroduced for the over sixties?
  • Who is the leader?
  • What was his former job?
  • What does the social worker say to explain their anti social behaviour?
  • How does the local community plan to combat the gang of retirees?
  • Why couldn’t they issue an ASBO to them?
  • Do you think the video is critical with antisocial behaviour policies? Why? Why not?

And now for something completely different. Strip Studios have produced this song and video for ASBO Nation.  It’s a satirical look at the hoodie lifestlye (even though you might  wonder whether some of the participants in the video knew that this was making  fun at hoodies)
The video covers every issue you could think of associated with hoodies, and young urban gangs: from drugs to ASBOs, drink, police and being rude to older people.

There are some slang words you may not be familiar with.

  • I love binge drinking
  • I love to smoke grass
  • I wear low baggies
  • that are hanging of me ass
  • I wear a massive hoodie
  • and I’ve got a vicious dog
  • I haven’t got no manners
  • I’m a horid little yob
  • Third generation claim
  • My whole  family is on the dole
  • I’ve got no education
  • and I’ve got no long term goal
  • I got my girlfriend pregnant
  • So I got a council flat
  • I got a dozen ASBOs
  • I’ve been arrested 20 times
  • I only got a tickle
  • I never got punished for my crimes
  • I told the judge my life is hard
  • So I never got far
  • They say I see you next week
  •  when you steal another car.

Would you say the video is made with a tongue-in -cheek (ironically) ?

Post your comments to the blog. Did you learn any new words?

In order to avoid the negative image  of young people which has been widely spread on the media, there have been different initiatives at word level.  Here follow some samples.

UNICEF staff will be among thousands of Kiwis around the country wearing a hoodie on 12 August to support the right of young people to have their opinions heard and taken notice of. Also supporting the day are Age Concern and NZ Adolescent Health and Development.

“There are too many negative stereotypes of youth in New Zealand today, so International Youth Day is an ideal time for us to give a thought to young people’s positive achievements and demonstrate support for their contribution to our society,” says UNICEF Executive Director Dennis McKinlay.

“Young people offer their talents and goodwill in many and varied ways including helping their families and communities.

“They inspire us with their achievements and stand up for young people to have their say about the world that they want to inherit.

“Young people challenge us with their vision of optimism and vibrancy – the way the world should be and can be if we work together for positive change”.

“Hoodies are associated with youth culture and Goodie in a Hoodie day is an expression of how many youth see themselves and want others to see them” says Mr McKinlay.

  • The second one from  Merseyside  in Great Britain. Teenagers are challenged to break the stereotype in their community.  Read about this initiative tto tackle the often-negative image of teenagers.

Finally, for those of you who are interested in the topic, there is a good article in the Guardian that analyses how a comfy, utilitarian item of clothing has become the ultimate symbol of exclusion and menace. Read the whole article here

The first BBC comedy program’s video is a parody about hoodies in which a group of retired yobs bother the local people. The second one is a Strip Studio’s video and is imitating hoodies’ way of life, explaining everything these people is supposed to do. To be honest, I haven’t liked any of those videos. I just think they’re ridiculous. Trying to imitate them and making parodies is not the best people can do to solve the problem of that type of gangs.
From the other hand, I almost agree with what the texts talk about. The first one explains a Unicef’s project in New Zealand that tries to end up with negative stereotypes of youth. The second text is about the same topic, but the stage is Britain: they want young people to do something in their neightbourhood so they can change the negative stereotype. And the third one talks about a group of teenagers who want to show the world that hoodies are not as bad as people think. As I’ve said before, I agree with the texts because I like this type of initiatives, but I also believe there are more groups of people that are also discriminated and judged and, however, they don’t get any type of help.
This is the vocabulary I didn’t know before watching the second video:
“My whole family is on the dole”, “I’ve got no long term goal”, “I only got a tickle”.

  2. Sorry, I’ve forgotten the new words that I have learnt by watching the second video, that are:
    -Massive: enorme
    -Yob: gamberro
-On the dole: estar en paro
    -Goal: objetivo
    -Tickle: cosquillas

    🙂

  3. The first video is a parodical view of the nowadays antisocial behaviour. It is shown a group of elderlies in a park bench that have fun scaring and bothering the people that walk around. Later, they try to integrate themselves in the society. It is quite fun, I think.

The second one is a musical video that critizes hoodies. It appears a group of hoodies singing what they usually do like drinking, smoking, stealing… nothing good.

On the other hand, the three texts are about supporting teenagers and different inciatives to demonstrate that young people is not as bad as the image people have of them: the first text is made by UNICEF that have set an International Youth Day, in order to show the positive side of young people and their actions in our society; the second one, made by Merseyside in Britain, consists in a campaing to encourage teenagers to do anything in their neighbour to erase the bad image that have british people of adolescents; thrid one talks about “Goodies” a campaign made to clean the bad image of the hoodies by doing social works wearing hoods, like reading to kids.

  4. The firts video is a parody of teen behaviour nowadays, the video is about a group of retirees who spend all the day in the park disturbing people.
I don’t like the second video because I think it’s a bit hard to understand and i have to whatc the video a lot of times and If you pay attention you understand everything. In the video we can see a group of young people living surrounded by vandalism.

The first text is about a campaign by UNICEF in New Zealand in my opinion I think is a good idea because we understand the point of view of young in this way they can contribute to society.
The second text is good to motivate young people that not all are problematic and that many young people who can do good things for society.
The third text is similar to the previous text, the UK wants to see that young people are also important and they are not all thugs.

    Articles
.The first text is “UNICEF Supports ‘Goodie in a Hoodie’ day” it’s a campaing that have realized unicef staff to suports young people and their freedoms, also they want to remove all the stereotypies that people have of them, and it consists of wearing a hoodie on the 12 of August. About this special campaing ,I want to give all my support and maybe, I would wear a hoodie the 12 of August .
The second article talks about of an initiative to improve the bad image of young people . Everybody can give ideas to improve the image people have of them. A lot of people believe that just being young or wearing hoodies have to be criminals, and it’s a wrong way of think.

  6. lagemiguel says:

    Hi everyone!

In the first video we can see a comedy of street gangs. They have anti social behaviourand also all the group do what old teenagers would do. It is a funny video because they use a street vocabulary that looks like the language that the young people would use and it is made by old people.
    The new vocabulary is this:
    – Former solicitor
    – Former solicitor: ex-fiscal
    – Turned out: Resultó:
    – Retirees: jubliados.
    – Troublemakers: agitadores
    – Hang around: andar antiguo fiscal
    – Polices politicas
The second video that it is called “I’m a Hoodie A.S.B.O. Nation”, it’s a musical video about hoodies, futhermore it is a parody .In this video, it appears a group of guys wearing a hoodie, it is fun because it is an ironic way to say that the ASBO is not working . In my opinion the best thing of the video is that they did a strange kind of rap that it doesn´t sound very well!!!
    Here I have some vocabulary:
    yob -gamberro
hanging of me ass -colgando de mi trasero
    somke grass – fumar hierba
on the dole -en el paro

  7. virginiapinel says:

    Hi everyone!
    Video 1:
In this video we can see a parody of street gangs. The Group of elderly have anti social behaviour. They do what the group of old teenagers would do. The video is funny because we aren’t used to see this behaviour in elderly people.
    The new vocabulary is this:
    – Hang around: andar
    – Former solicitor: ex-fiscal
    – Polices: politicas
    – Retirees: jubliados.
    – Troublemakers: agitadores
    – Former solicitor: antiguo fiscal
    – Turned out: Resultó
    – Local magistrate: juez local
    Video 2:
In this video we would see a young group which name’s hoodie. They describe singing her life. i don’t know to say more for this video because they speak very fast but whith the vocabulary that there below i think they have very crazy life.
    Text 1:
This text explain campaign for UNICEF in favour of young. This campaign is in New Zeland. It questions the idea about the young that much people in the society have of them. This campaign defends ideas of young and it gives them one point a favour. I agree this iniciative because some people have wrong idea of the young.
    The new vocabulary is this:
    – achievements: logros
    – inherit: heredar
    Text 2:
This text speak about the campaign in Great Brentanya to change the aspect for the british young. I think that it is good idea because in Great Bretanya have bad image of young but everyone does and it dresses as it want.
    The new vocabulary is this:
    – aimed: objetivo
    – allegedly: presuntamente
    – stab: punyalada
    Text 3:
this text speak about a new campaign against the wrong idea that the youngs to wear hoodies have anti social behaviour. In my opinion this campaign is a good iniciative because to wear or not hoodies not define your personality
    The new vocabulary is this:
    – Dispel: disipar
    – Aimed: objetivo
    – Poppies: amapolas
    – goodie: sorpresas
    – ward: sala
    – tackle: tratar de resolver
    – badge: insignia
    – allegedly: supuestamente

  8. andreuramis says:

The first article talks about the hoodies. This social group is related with youth culture and nowadays is used too of how young people want to look like and want others to see them.

The second article explains that there are an inicitive in britain where the young people of the neighbourhood have to make acitivities to show a good behaviour.

The third text is about an initiative to make aware the society that hoodies are not bad guys.

  9. ainamarti says:

The first video is a parody of now a days teens behavior.
The video is about a retired gang that spends the whole day in a park disturbing people.
On the other hand the second one shows an ironic view of the hoodies life-style.
They use rap music to explain their position in the society, but from my point of view some of the aspects mentioned in the video are a little bit exaggerated.
The first text is about an Unicef campaign in New Zealand, in my opinion, is a great idea that all achievements and contributions that young people do to the society are taken into account, because it’s a good way to have another point of view and to know their worries.
The second text is a good way to motivated teenagers and to break the stereotypes in their community. I think this campaign important because they need to know that people believe in them and not everybody thinks that there are yobs, and they can do very important things for their society.
The third text keeps some relation with the opinion that i have explained on the second test, as I said before, been a teenager doesn’t mean that you are a yob. This is the idea that Uk youth parliament want to present.

    VIDEOS
    -OAP ASBO:
This funny video is about retiree gangs who have an antisocial behaviour with their community. It has made me laugh a lot, especially the part where an old man shows her butt. At the end of the video we can see how they try to integrate into society, making us laugh again.

    -I’m a hoodie ASBO Nation:
I have not liked this music video for different reasons. I have found it hard to understand and I think they speak too fast. Tn the video we can see a group of friends that talk about their life, wich is quite marginal, I think, because they live with bad habits and surrounded by vandalism.
The new vocabulary I have learned with this video:
    yob (gamberro)
on the dole (en el paro)
long term goal (objetivo a largo plazo, meta)
    tickle (cosquillas)

    TEXTS
    -First one:
This text is about an UNICEF project in New Zealand which have the purpose to raise awareness that the opinion of young people is important. Youth have the right to express themselves and have opinions about today’s society and its problems, so if they are the future we have to let them work to society.
    Vocabulary:
    staff (personal, empleados)
    goodwill (buena voluntad)
    vibrancy (vitalidad)
    Inherit (heredar)
    Kiwis (neozelandeses)

    -Second one:
In this text we can see that, in Britain, people have created a campaign to defend the honor of youth and to superate the social prejudices. In this campaign the teenagers can write a postcard saying what do they suggest to improve their reputation.
    Vocabulary:
    tackling (lucha contra…)
badge of honour (medalla de honor)
    allegedly (presuntamente)
    stab (apuñalar)

    -Third one:
This text is about a campaign in the UK which aims are to defend the image of the “Hoodies” in the society and to show the world that they can be polite, friendly, sympathetics and very sociable.
I have to say that I think this video is a bit repetitive and the three texts have the purpose to change the vision people have of “hoodies”
    Vocabulary:
    launch (poner en marcha)
    dispel (disipar)
    poppies (amapolas)

  11. ainavazquez says:

The first video, OAP ASPO, is an humorist video. It’s a parody of the gangs of nowadays. But instead of young people, the protagonists are old. And they do it because they have a lot of time, because they are retired.

The second video, “I’m a Hoodie A.S.B.O. Nation”, is another parody, about the gangs behaviour of England.

The first text talks about the UNICEF’s campaing, that wants to chage the idea that the people have about the young people and the hoods. They try to chanche it making a claim: on 12 of August, all unicef staffs there going to wear a hood.

The second video is very similar. It’s a campaing to change the bad young people image in England. This campaing invite young people to contribute sending new ideas that can make it.

That’s all. Sorry about the brief summary, but I have to study a lot of Spain’s History!

  12. gaburomero says:

    Hi..! 2A(SS)
In the first video is bad behavior, but what surprises me most is that these are older people as being large behave that incorrectly. These people have lack of education and behavior. But the talks could help with educational skills
The vocabulary that I have learned is:
    *retirees: jubliados
    *polices: politicas

In the second video is a rap music. In my opinion they are young they walk in evil ways, so say they have sometimes gone to jail. But I really liked the things they said in the video, like smoke, leaving a pregnant woman. Quisas are youngsters who have been through the ugly and they tell their story.
The vocabulary that I have learned is:
    *yob: gamberro

    In the first text:
    International Youth Day
This text is about UNICEF to support the right of young people to have their views heard.
Where are associated many young people including those hooded sweatshirt.
Where teenagers are challenged to break the stereotype in their community. Read about this initiative tto tackle the often-negative image of teenagers.
    interesting words:
    achievements: logros
    goodwill: buena voluntad

    In the secod text
Is similar to UNICEF from here but this helps a group of children who have a negative image and can be violent or frowned upon. To my opinion it seems very good to help children and youth to go in steps not bad.
    interesting words:
    *badge: divisa
    *tackling: lucha contra….

    In the third text
It’s called Goodie in a Hoodie, which are a group who want to help young hooded sweatshirt, help them to be sociable, to be in society and to be friendly or helpful. In my opinion I really like and I take my doubts because if I had heard but had not understood. I think rather than worry about the problems of others, not even one in particular
    The words is learned:
    *overseen: supervisado
    *pupil: pupila, alumno, educando
    *poppies: amapolas
    byeee..! 😀

    Hi! 😀

    Video 1.
This video shows us how a group of older people have antisocial behavior.

In my opinion I think that this video shows a behavior similar to the young gang members today. Young people don’t think they are equally dirty and poorly educated than older people that we see in the video. To us it is very strange that older people have this behavior although we find it normal that young people have it.

The vocabulary I learned from this video is this:
    – Hang around: andar
    – Former solicitor: ex-fiscal
    – Polices: politicas
    – Retirees: jubliados.
    – Troublemakers: agitadores
    – Former solicitor: antiguo fiscal
    – Turned out: Resultó

    Video 2.
This video is the behavior of a group of people who call themselves hoodies. They rap to tell you marched their way of life. Although I like to think that they do not have a life like these.

I think it’s a funny video but for me it is difficult to understand. Maybe if the music was other stile I would be understandable it better.
I can’t write more about this song because I have understood the context but not much the letter.

This video has helped me to learn the following vocabulary:
    – Binge drinking: consumo excesivo de alcohol
    – Manners: modales
    – Yob: gamberro
    – On the dole: en el paro
    – Council: consejo
    – Girlfriend pregnant: novia embarazada
-Third generation claim: reclamación de tercera generación

    Text 1.
It is a movement that is supporting the hoodies. They say that while we identify withyoung people from bad habits or uncivilized behavior, the International Youth Day is a good day to show their support for their contribution to New Zealand society.

From my point of view money and time invested in it should go to other campaigns which need it more. As I said before this is just my opinion and I understand but do not share that there are people who care about these things.

I’ve learned new vocabulary with this text:
    – achievements: logros
    – goodwill: buena voluntad
    – inherit: heredar
    – challenge: desafio
    – Give a thought: dar una idea

    Text 2.
This text talks about a campaign that aims to combat the bad image of adolescentsin Great Brentanya.

I think it’s a good idea that this may serve to lead teens in the right direction andanother part to help change the image of the place.
    Interesting vocabulary:
    – Aimed: objetivo
    – Tackling: lucha contra
    – Badge: insignia
    – Allegedly: presuntamente
    – Stabbing: puñalada
    – Aimed: objetivo
    – Tackling: lucha contra
    – Badge: insignia

  14. MariaMartinez says:

    Hi everyone!

The first video is a parody of street gangs. The video shows a band of retirees who intimidate their neighbors, mimicking typical street gangs but with actions appropriate to their age. in general the video is very funny.

The second video is a video that explains how often one component of a street gang is, as how the law forgives them because they will never change. With this video I have learned new vocabulary that I don’t think I would learn in one of our regular classes jaja

The first text talks of the initiative in New Zealand to listen to young people who have much to offer to society. Sounds like a great idea, because in general old people never hear the voice of adolescents, we were always considered too young to think about the world.

the second text speaks of an initiative to improve the image of young people where they are much more involved. Everyone can give ideas to improve the image people have of them. Many people believe that just being young or wearing tracksuit have to be criminals, and it’s a terrible mistake.

The final text speaks of a campaign to explain the world to wear hoodies not mean you’re a bad influence. There are many teens who wear this kind of clothes and they’re responsible and enjoyable.

I don’t know if we have to write here the vocabulary, so I have it in my notebook 🙂

    Hi!
    1) OAP ASBO video:
This video is very enterteining, it’s a parody of antisocial behaviour but a bit changed. In the video we can observe a gang of elders whose leader is called Roger, the reportage shows how they behave, the things they do, how they scare the people… Later we have a few testimonies of people that who has suffered them and they explain it. Finally the leader is trying to change with the help of one of the interviewed ones.
I have liked the video overcoat the beginning when Roger scares a young person, it’s a funny moment.
This is the vocabulary that I have learned:
    – former solicitor: ex-fiscal
    – retired: jubilado
    – off licences and groceries: de licencias y comestibles
    2) I’m a hoodie ASBO Nation:
Yeah man!! This video takes with humor the prototype that is had on chavs, gangstas and hoodies in England, it’s a parody of them. The images are funnier than the lyric and it’s a bit difficult to understand because they use words of the street. The dog has an important paper in the video because it’s important to provoke fear.
    New vocabulary:
    – on the dole: en el paro
    – yob: gamberro
    3) The text is an UNICEF campaing in New Zeland in favour of the young people. It defends the ideas, the talent and it is in opposition to prejudging the young persons. They have proposed one international day for the rights of the youth. I’m agree with the text, nowadays some people put a tag to the youth and it is unfair.
    – achievements: logros
    – inherit: heredar
    4) I think that the campaing “More than Hoodies” is more personal, the text includes a vision of the young people in Britain that it does not have anything to see in any cases with the reality, it is generalized and criticizing with them. Obviously this opinion has his retractors and some people are trying to change this opinion about them with signs, letters…
    Vocabulary:
    – aimed: objetivo
    – allegedly: presuntamente
    – stab: puñalada
    5) The article speaks about the bad image that is had of the boys by hood and the group of boys. In the text are some interviews from Coventry and they are in use for knowing what they think about the topic and there are some thoughts. I remain with the first lines when the text says that the people with hood can be nice, a good people and another good things. I can’t stand when someone speaks badly about other one for his appearance and not for what is really.
    New vocabulary from the text:
    – goodie: sorpresas
    – aimed: objetivo
    – poppies: amapolas
    – ward: sala

    Hi everyone!
    1) OAP ASBO video
This video is a parody of other reportages which talk about anti-social behavior. In this case the anti-social behavior is caused by a group of old “teenagers”: four sixty year-old like to hang out putting the music really loud and letting trash wherever they go.
I think it’s a very funny video, it has made me laugh a lot with the “unfinished Sudoku” or when they said “one of them is the local magistrate”. I’ve liked it very much, and my favourite scene was when Roger’s wife appears and they all start running! 😀
    Some vocabulary I’ve learned:
    – Former solicitor: ex-fiscal
    – Local magistrate: juez local
    2) I’m a hoodie ASBO Nation
I’ve liked a lot this video, even if the rap isn’t very sophisticated. It’s another parody about chavs, gangsters, hoodies in England and the antisocial behaviour they create. The video caricatures their symbols or characteristics with many humour and irony. I love their dog and when they say: “it’s the end of the world, it’s the hoodies apocalypse! Even your mum is going to wear a hood.”
This video is quite difficult to understand because of the slang vocabulary they use and because they speak fast and without vocalize.
    New vocabulary:
    -yob: gamberro
-hanging of my ass: colgando de mi culo (baggy trousers)
-on the dole: en el paro
    3) UNICEF Supports ‘Goodie in a Hoodie’ day
The first text talks about a campaign whose purpose is supporting young people and their ideas. This UNICEF campaign has been made to change the opinion that society has of youth which is pejorative. Young are the future and they need to express their opinion and ideas with freedom.
I think it’s a good idea because freedom of speech or opinion is an essential right, but there are bigger problems to solve around the world, don’t you think so?
    Vocabulary:
    – Kiwis: neozelandeses
    – Inherit: heredar
    – Achievements: logros
    4) “More than hoodies campaign”
The second text talks also about a campaign, but this one has been done in Britain. It challenges teenagers to break the stereotypes they may have in their community. They can send ideas to change this image, which I think is good. We’re able to change this; we can avoid prejudices, because we’re not all the same. I mean, not all the young are irreverent or violent.
    New vocabulary:
    – Allegedly = presuntamente
    – Stab = puñalada
    5) Coventry teenagers: Hoodies aint so bad!
The last (yes) text tells us about a group of teenagers that have made a campaign- like to show the world wearing hoods isn’t equal to being a bad hoodie or a yob. I think doing a forum to talk about it is a good point. It will allow them to expose their point of view and defend their ideas. I really hope they will “win” in a sense, because adults still think those young who are a bit “perro-flauta”, with dreadlocks, tattoos, piercings… are antisocial or a bad influence for “normal” children.
    Vocabulary:
    – Dispel: disipar
    – Aimed: objetivo
    – Poppies: amapolas
Good luck with your exams! Don’t get stressed 🙂

    Hi!
I believe that the reasons and explanations from the first article are the best ones. They summarise the ideas of all the articles. Although I must say that the way they want to support the youth, spend a day wearing a hoodie, is not really effective.
I think the activity from the second campaign is the more effective one because it involves directly the youth. The campaign wants to show that not all the youth is so yob as the people think. Therefore is easier to solve the problem and raise awareness.
Finally the third article is superfluous for me. I think the arguments that this young pupils explain are weak, like say that they wear hoodie when it is cold or rainy but they dont have anything to do wiht the hoodies, it is obvious. Even though I totally agree with the aim of the campaign.

I forgot talking about the videos!
Very briefly, just say that the first one is fun and it’s a good way of criticizing the policies. And about the second video, it was quite difficult to understand all the lyrics, but I tried, and I think the song is more efficient than the parody from the first video to get the aim: asking the authorities for a change.

  19. dionisrubi says:

    Let’s talk about the articles:
About the first article, I think the idea of wearing a hoodie during a whole day to support young people in New Zeland is not a very useful thought, because, in my opinion, is very ideal, instead of making something material that really help teenagers in the country and change the thought of the society that gives youth in New Zeland too many negative stereotypes.
I believe the method of the second article is more effective than the one form the first article, but it’s not the definitive yet, because it involves those teenagers who have a negative image in Britain, even though they don’t misbehave, and want to tell the society they’re not bad people. But, as you can decide wether you take the challenge or not, those hoodies who really have an antisocial behaviour and give the youth the bad reputation can choose not taking the challenge and, as a consequence, they will keep on misbehaving, so the problem won’t be eradicated.
About the third article, I must admit this is the most useful method, because in this case, hoodies are mobilizing and trying to convince the authorities that hoodies are not bad guys by telling them situations where they wear their hoodies because they need to do it, not to intimidate anyone (when it’s raining, for example).
So, if I had to choose one of the three methods from the articles, I would definitely choose the one from the third article, because, as I said, I think it’s the most efficient.

    Hi!!!!

    Video:
The first video is a parody of a report about street gangs, the funny thing is in the fact that the band is made up of older people. Older people behave like antisocial teenagers who disturb neighbors. I liked the video because it’s so funny
The second video is a music video, the video is a parody of antinsocial behavior that the gangs do, the characters try to to imitate the behavior of the bands. the video is hard to understand because it has much new vocabulary.
In my opinion the best video is the first, because it is easy to understand. The first is this best done.

    Texts:
2009 UNICEF campaing in New Zealand
The first text is a UNICEF campaign that takes place in New Zealand. This campaign supports young people and their freedoms. The article says that society has a bad opinion of teenagers. It is a campaign you want to delete all the stereotypes that society has against the young.
    “More than Hoodies”
The second text is about a second campaign that takes place in Britain, a group ofMerseyside began a campaign to change the image of the young, the good thing is that these young people can give ideas to change this fact.
A GROUP of Coventry teenagers are trying to transform the image of the “hoodie”. Is a group of young people who want to demonstrate that the hoods are not a sign of delinquency .
The good thing about these campaigns is that young people also help for change the situation, they also participate in the campaign.

    Vocabulary:
I haven’t got no manners – no tengo modales
I’m a horid little yob – soy un poco gamberro
My whole family is on the dole – toda mi familia esta en el paro
I love to smoke grass – me gusta fumar hierba

  21. maarga3 says:

Hi everyone! I’m Marga Maimó and I have seen the two videos.
    – The first one “OAB APSO” is a humorous progeram about a retirees gang that intimidates and bothers the locals so, a social woker wants to repair their antisocial behaviour. In my opinion the first one is better than the other one, and definetly the video is critical with antisocial behaviour people, trying to make awareness to them by using humor and ridiculing his behavior.
-The second one which is called “I’m a Hoodie A.S.B.O. Nation”, it’s a music video about hoodies, and it’s also a humor video .In the video, it appears a group of guys wearing a hoodie, I think to suport young people who always is critizied. But, as I said before, although this video it’s so funny because everyone who appears on the video do it having a good time collaborating all together, I believe is not so good as the first on. The new vocabulary that I have learnt is the folowing:
    somke grass ( fumar hierba)
hanging of me ass (colgando de mi trasero)
    yob (gamberro)
on the dole (en el paro)
I only got a tickle (solo tengo un cosquilleo)
A part of these words, I believe the rest of vocabulary is so easy to understand.

-The first text that I have read which is called “UNICEF Supports ‘Goodie in a Hoodie’ day” it’s a campaing that have realized unicef staff to suports young people and to eliminated all the stereotypies that people have of them, and it consists of wearing a hoodie the day 12 of August. About this original campaing I give all my support and definitely, I would wear a hoodie the 12 of August to try to change the situation.

    – The second text talks about a group based in Merseyside that started a campaing to eliminate a negative image of teenagers in Britain that people have now a days, and to change the idea that most teenagers have a character violent or an antisocial behaviour.
I’m also agree with this campaing, that have almost the same objective that the first one but using others methods.

-The third one, it’s also about misconceptions of young people so, a group of teenagers are trying to change that.
I’m happy that appart of doing various campaings, it is also the same teenagers who are involved, helping each other to suppress the stereotypes that ridicule and accuse people of something that are not.

    More than hoodies!

  22. paulalozano says:

Hi everyone, I’m Paula Lozano from (2BSS)
-The first video, called OAP ASBO, in my opinion is better than the other one. In this comedy video, we can see a gang who have antisocial behaivour but they are not teenagers, the thing that makes it unusual is that the components of the gang are old people and most of them are retired. The funniest moment for me is when the local social worker (Chris May) says that we have to undersand them, because they have been working all their lifes and now, they have a lot free time and they don’t know what to do. And after wathing it 3 or 4 times I have realized that the bald bod said that they put the radio really loud, and that’s funny too.
    New vocabulary:
    -retired: jubilado
    -currently:en la actualidad
    -former solicitor:antiguo fiscal
    -local magistrate:magistrado local

-The second video, called “I’m a Hoodie A.S.B.O. Nation”, is a funny way to say that the ASBO is not working in England. I think that the best thing of the video is that they are singing all the time and I have to say that now I can’t forget this –I’m a hoodie! Because they have repeated this word a lot of times. One curious thing is that in minute 0:30 you can see that this shop is selling sobrasada!. This video is trying to say that they are not bad people, and the say it in a ironic tone. For example: they say that they have no education, or they only want to drink, but this is all ironic. And the funniest momento of the video is when the dog with the mouth says:I’m a hoodie! And the when it says: is the end of the world, this is the hoodie apocalypse, even your mum is going to wear a hood, this part is funny too.
    New vocabulary:
-on the dole: en el paro
-never got punished: nunca fui castigado

-First text called “UNICEF Supports ‘Goodie in a Hoodie’ day”. It says that the 12 Of August, the Unicef staff will be going to wear a hoodie to suppor the Young people. They said that nowadays a lot of poepole have wrong idea of the youth from New Zealand, and this is a bad thing because they have talent, and a usually the try to help their families.
    New vocabulary:
    -positive achievements:logros positivos
    -goodwill:buena voluntad
    -goodie:sorpresas

-The second text called “more than hoodies campaign”. The idea of this campaing is to challenge Young people to do something to change the negative stereotype that a lot of british people have of them. I think that this will work because usually teenagers have really good imagination.
    New vocabulary:
    -challenge: desafío
    -badge of honour:insignia de honor
    -stabbing:puñalada

-And the third and the last text, “Coventry teenagers: Hoodies aint so bad! “ It is about a group of Coventry teenagers that are trying to change the image of the “hoodie”.
In my opinion this text is really interesting. Now I really understand them, because after reading the feelings of almost two or three teenagers from UK(for example Lauren Ardeson) I can undrestand them. I’m really happy of leaving in a place that I can walk with my friends at the street and nobody will look us as we have made something wrong, or another example, I’m happy because I can put my hood when it’s raining and nobody will say anything.
    New vocabulary:
    -youngsters: los jóvenes
    -ward forum: sala de foro
    -overseen:supervisado
    -tagline:lema

    Have a nice weekend

  23. 2B (SS)
    Hi!

    OAP ASBO video:
This video is a parody of a reportage where you can see a gang of old people that behave like if they were rowdy antisocial teenagers or young hooligans. The authorities can do nothing because one of the members of the crew is a local magistrate and they disturb the neighbourhood.
In my opinion, is a good video similar to series in Spain such as “Malviviendo” or “Vaya Semanita”. It really made me laugh when Jim Harris shows the “unfinished sudoku”.
There is some vocabulary I learnt watching the video:
    – Troublemakers = agitadors, esvalotadors
    – Former solicitor = antic fiscal
    – Turned out = va resultar

    I’m a Hoodie video:
A music video that tries to taunt society, specifically it’s about chavs and gangsters from England. The guys in the video try to parody (again) the antisocial behaviour that gangs do. It is ironic, they try to make them “so bad”.
I think is funny because it reminds me of a famous video that most of you probably know: “El Tito MC”. However, it is a little bit difficult to understand because of the slang they use and because they are singing. I believe that it should have subtitles.
    New vocabulary:
    – Binge drinking = consum excessiu d’alcohol
    – Dole = atur
    – Yob = disbauxat

    First text:
This text talks about a UNICEF campaign in New Zealand whose mission is to support young people ideas and freedom. They say that society has a bad concept of youth but they are the future, they try to help with goodwill and optimism.
I don’t like this text. Maybe I’m being politically incorrect but, in my opinion, world has worse issues to solve than this. I repeat: is my opinion, they’re free to do whatever they want but I wouldn’t do it.
    Vocabulary:
    – Inherit = heretar
    – Achievement = assoliment
    – Give a thought = fer una idea, donar una idea

    Second text:
A campaign has started to change the idea that youth in England is violent and irreverent by challenging teenagers to give ideas to lift up this image. They can send ideas to change their neighbourhood in a good sense.
I think it’s a good initiative to try to raise the reputation of the country. At the same time, they are achieving youth to be creative and help with their proposals.
    Interesting vocabulary:
    – Badge = distintiu
    – Allegedly = presumptament
    – Spoon = cullera
    – Stab = punyalada

    Third text
Some teenagers from Coventry have launched a campaign to delete the bad image that carries to wear a hoodie. They think that wearing a hooded sweatshirt is not a reason for people to be afraid of them and want to change this thought.
Again, I believe they’re fighting for a good cause but I don’t think it will be successful. Sadly, nowadays youth is not able to change the concept that adult people has of things. I wouldn’t like the people think about me that, because wearing “rastas” or having tattoos I’m a rebel.
    Vocabulary:
    – Poppies = roselles
    – Ward = sala
    – Worth = valor

  24. mariatoran says:

    Hi!
In the first video, we can see a retirees who have an anti-social behaviour, they threaten the other people and they behave as leaders, so an expert decide show us this gang and what is the opinion with the other people, and in this video appear the solution and why. In my opinion, it is very silly in a town this type of beahves because the image is very bad and seems that the authorities don’t want to do anything. I belive that these seniors don’t have anything better to do and they are bored.
The vocabulary that I have learned is:
    -polices: politicas
    -retirees: jubliados
The second video talks about a band and the member’s life, he speaks about his life with a rap very stupid and I think that if someone have this life, he shouldn’t show off, because it’s sad that he don’t want to change. The vocabulary which sorprise me is:
    – manners: modales
    – yob: gamberro
The first document is about UNICEF and they are an organisation that defend teens and their opinion and of the rights of children and youngs. I think that this is a dood forms to help children that then they can get an ASBO and they feel more important in the society. A very nice vocabulary is:
    – achievements: logros
    – goodwill: buena voluntad
    – rights: derechos
The second document is very similar to the first and it is a group which helps children who have a negative image and they considered violent. I think both of them are really good because the youngs are undervalued so reduce the possibility they become an anti-social group.
I have learned some new words:
    – aimed: objetivo
    – tackling: lucha contra
    – badge: insignia
The last group is called Goodie in a Hoodie which want to help teenagers who use hooded tops and they know that this type of youngs can be friendly and they show to the society. For me, this organisation is the best because the other helps everybody but in this case they worry for a problem of acceptance.
    I didn’t know:
    – goodie: sorpresa
    – overseen: supervisado
    – pupil: alumno
    – poppies: amapolas

    Hi everyone!

The first video talks about bad behaviours that are taking a sixty year old band and the plan of the local community to cambat it.
I liked it very much, it made me laugh a lot, and it is also very easy to understand it. In my opinion this is a good point of view, ironic and funny of course, to show how bad behaviours affect the other part of people in the society.
I have learned some vocabulary watching this video:
    – hang around: andar
    – former solicitor: ex-fiscal
    – polices: politicas
    – retirees: jubliados.

The second video is extremly funny, I would like to say that is better in this way than the first one. It’s a hip-hop song that is made by hoody boys, not as amazing as Kanye West ones for example, but they do it so good too. They rap about their style, their behaviour, their look and their way of life. I love this video, I have watched it three times at least once after another. I’m fond of this guys, they are really funny. With this video I have learned new vocabulary too:
    – binge drinking: consumo excesivo de alcohol
    – manners: modales
    – yob: gamberro
    – on the dole: en el paro
    – council: consejo
    – tickle: cosquillas

2009 UNICEF CAMPAIGN IN NEW ZELAND
This text is about Neu Zeland taking part in a movement of supporting the rights of young people wearing a hoodie. There are too many negative steretypes of youth and we have to give opportunities to them and recognize good things they do. And the text says that some people think that some wear hoddies because it is some kind of little culture and I absolutely agree, everyone have rights of wearing what they want.
The vocabulary I have learned is the following:
    – achievements: logros
    – goodwill: buena voluntad
    – inherit: heredar
    – challenge: desafio

    “MORE THAN HOODIES”CAMPAIGN
This text, instead, talk about a campaign that wants to combat the negative image of teenagers in Britain, challenging themselves of doing it.
As I see it it is a perfect way to solve this kind of problems because in many cases this kind of young people are very competitive and they would like to do something to prove themselves that they can do it.
Reading this text I have learned some new words:
    – aimed: objetivo
    – tackling: lucha contra
    – badge: insignia
    – allegedly: presuntamente
    – stabbing: puñalada

COVENTRY TEENAGERS: HOODIES AINT SO BAD!
The last text is about teenagers that want to transform the image of “hoodie”. This is because hoodies are frowned and they want to prove that hoodies can be caring, friendly and responsible. It also says all the measures they will take and they say that if it persuades someone, it will be useful.
As I have said before, I agree that this apearance doesn’t neccesary means the tipical hoody values but there are many other good ones behind those hoods.
The vocabulary that I didn’t know before is:
    – goodie: sorpresas
    – poppies: amapolas
    – ward forum: sala de foro
    – rush: carrera
    – overseen: supervisado.

    ENJOY A NICE WEEKEND!!

About the article of “More than Hoodies” Campaign 17/11/2011 I’ve answered this questions.

    * Do parents need to work harder?
In my opinion parents are the people who have to educate seriously their children because if they don’t do that it would end like it’s happening now. If parents do they work this web page will not exist.

    * Do young people need to calm down?
Yes, young people have to calm down because in this age they use to think that they are the centre of the world, they think that they are the most important thing and that’s why they act like that. They thing that is trendy doing bad things.

    * Should we give up hope and build a load of borstals?
Well, I think that this is not necessary. The solution resides on obligating them to do social works.

    * Should we have night-time curfews for young people, like in Canada?
No, because if not young people that are responsible won’t be able to do what they want at night.

    * Do other laws need to change?
Perhaps yes because the law nowadays I think it’s really lax.

    * Should younger and older generations be mixing more? If so how?
Well it is not really necessary because people have to stay with their friends. In my case I have some older friends but I don’t think it should be like that. Anyway it can be a good idea because older people use to be more mature so, like that, young people will give them as an example.

  27. Answers of the first video

1- What is unusual about this gang?
The fact that makes it unusual is that the components of the gang are retired people.
2- Where do they hang around?
The gang hang around the park.
3- Why are the locals intimidated?
Because they play the radio really loud.
4- What does the shop owner suggest should be reintroduced for the over sixties?
The shop owner suggested to reintroduce national service.
    5- Who is the leader?
The leader is Roger Pickering .
6- What was his former job?
    He was a former solicitor.
7- What does the social worker say to explain their anti social behaviour?
He say that they used to work every day and now they have nothing to do.
8- How does the local community plan to combat the gang of retirees?
Awarding the group as an ASBO’s.
9- Why couldn’t they issue an ASBO to them?
Because one of them is the local magistrate.
10-Do you think the video is critical with antisocial behaviour policies? Why? Why not?
Yes, because it seems that this kind of policies related to antisocial behaviour are only meant for the youth while there are lots of antisocial behaviours that remain without being reported.
    Second video
Yes, I think so, because it gather all the stereotipes related to hoodies in a silly song in order to make the people think about the topic and get sure if all the children who wear a hoddie are as the prototypi described by the song, or maybe it is just a predujice like any other.
    Questions of the webpage
-Do parents need to work harder?
I think parents have a really important paper, maybe the most important. They have to educate their children as better as they can because it will really deteminate the behaviour of the child. So for answering the question I don’t really know what to say because there are parents who work very hard and others qho don’t do it, in my opinion they should work the hardest they can.
-Should we give up hope and build a load of borstals?
I think people should never give up hope. If there’s no hope all the improvments achieved will be unusfull and the society will get worse. Apart from this, i really think that the borstals are the worst solution, it is an archaic mesure.
-Should we have night-time cufews for young people, like in Canada?
Definitely not. I think that this doesn’t solve the problem, this is just the easiest way of getting sure that children won’t be doing vandalisim at night-time. If we impose a night-time curfew it won’t sort out the problem, so then children will do vandalisim at day-time
and which will be the next step? Will government impose a day-time curfew?
-Do other laws need to change?

-Should younger and older generations be mixing more? If so how?
I don’t really think so. Life is a proces, and as all the proces, it has different stages and the man has to pass for all this phases. With this I mean that there is a big difference between people of different ages so this mixture will be difficult.

    TEXTS
I read both texts and they say the same, the two texts want to change the negative stereotypes of the teenagers, especially the “hoodies”. UNICEF proposed dressing a hooded to support the rights of teenagers. In Merseyside proposed that all the teenagers in their district had to do something to change the stereotype that more hoodies are violent.
With this aid negative stereotype of the teenagers could change for better but to do this everybody have to collaborate.
Finally the third text talk about the same topic; a group of teenagers want to change the bad image of hoodie. It’s a campaign that shows teenagers who wear hooded tops can be frindly and responsible.

Questions about the first video :
    – The unusual thing is that trouble makers aren’t a gang of angry teams, they are a group of bored retirees. They are called as “Mag dogs”
    – They spend most of the time in a park bench.
    – Locals are intimidated because , this gang play de radio very loud
    – The shop owner suggest to introduce a national service for the over 60’s.
    – The leader is Roger Pickering
    -His job is former solicitor
-The social worker explains the antisocial behaviour saying that this people work everyday and they have nothing to do.
    – The plan to combat the gang of retirees is by awarding the group in ASBO
-Because one of the member of the gang, is the local magistrated.

I have read the 3 texts, and now I am going to write what they were about :

The first text talks about the support that UNICEF campaign in New Zeland, gives to the young generation. It also says that, stereotypes in New Zelans of young people use to be negative,so , UNICEF, wants to change this way of thinking about youth .

The second text takes place in Merseyside (Great Britain) and it says that a group of Merseyside is tackling to change youth’s negative image in Britain.

Finally, the third text is about a group of “Coventry teenagers” that , want to show that “hoodie” youth don’t have to be always unfriendly or urresponsible people only because of their aspect.

  31. mercenicolau says:

I’m not sure, but I think that we have to comment the three text about teenager’s problems. We don’t have to answer the questions because we did it in class together with Maria.

The first text is about an organization which is called UNICEF. That group try to give an opportunity for young people. They do that establishing an International Youth Day where the leading role, teenagers, can express their purpose, their opinion about our society and all the things that they want to do for contributing with the rest of population.
I think that it’s an original way for trying to provoke interest in young people for giving us their achievements.

The second one and the last one, are the teenagers who organize a challenge for showing to society that their stereotype are wrong. They think that they are prejudiced without reason and they want to change that.
One more time, I think that’s a really good solution to demonstrate different behaviors of youth and show to others that the negative image of teenagers isn’t always correct.

9- Why couldn’t they issue an ASBO to them?
Because one of them is the local magistrate.
10-Do you think the video is critical with antisocial behaviour policies? Why? Why not?
Yes, because from my point of view the most ABOSs are for young people.
Video number two. New vocabulary: pregnant, tickle,
Yes, I would say that is really ironicaly, because the video show us the life of the hoodies and join all the stereotipes of their so it tries to demostrate that the anti-social behaviour is not correct.

I have read the three texts and I understand the first and the second text really good, but the third is little more diffult but I understand more or less.

Firstly I want to comment the first and the second texts which are about the young stereotypes. They tell us that these stereotypes are caused some times because the young people who have anti-social behaviour they wear hood. For this reason, a lot of people think that most teenagers who wear and not wear hood are a bad youngs, so there are some organizations which want to change this thought with different demonstrations to support that there are a good youngs with a lot of interesting proposals. Finally, for example UNICEF helps these youngs and gives them chances to demostrate that they have good social behaviour.

And about the third text, I would say that it tell us about ” Why young people wear hood?” and it replys that is because they want to hide from society and adapt to the rules of the street to avoid the street conflicts too.

I think we have to answer the questions that are on the webpage because it talks about the solutions to youth crime and the fear of hoodies:

-Do parents need to work harder?
I think parents are important but In my opinion they aren’t the main factor of their children’s behaviour. There are violent teenagers who have parents who care and that can’t find any solution to change the attitude of their children
-Should we give up hope and build a load of borstals?
In my opinion it won’t be necessary. If they continue looking for solutions, the problem can be solved and it will help the decrease of the violence although it won’t finish with her.
-Should we have night-time cufews for young people, like in Canada?
I have looked for information about this curfew but I don’t understand it very well.
-Do other laws need to change?
I think there isn’t a problem of laws.
-Should younger and older generations be mixing more? If so how?
Yes,but I think it would be enough with more communication between the different members of a family

    new vocabulary: a tickle

    Three texsts:

They are groups in New Zeland, UK, and another group of teenagers that propose new and good things about young people.
All propostes are to avoid bad stereotypes of young people and change them with positive archievements. They say good things that young people contribute.

I thing that these iniciative is very necesary. I have faith in these iniciatives. Is a very big problem to be young. If you are in the street, there are some people that look you and they are afraid, because they think that you can steal something or another bad thing.
